Even the new content doesn’t really help resolving my issues with the lack of variety in the landscape. I’ve talked about how this region just isn’t that much fun to explore in other reviews and this is especially true for FRLG’s version of it. Future remakes were handled a lot better, but the biggest reason why FRLG falls short for me stems from the fact that Kanto just doesn’t really have a lot of meat on its bones. Being the first ever remakes in the franchise, I can’t fault them for not getting everything correct right out of the gate. ![]() Add to that the fact that Kanto is probably my least favorite region overall and it’s no surprise that FireRed and LeafGreen end up as probably the most forgettable mainline Pokémon games for me. With such a unique region design, a vibrant and extremely solid Pokédex and what could easily be called Pokémon’s first REAL attempt at writing an actually compelling story, there was just no way that Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald wouldn’t leave a huge impression on me. However, most of my appreciation for Gen III is directed exclusively towards the Hoenn games. For the first time in the franchise, it felt like Game Freak’s creations were fully realized, and the series was no longer being held back by the numerous hardware limitations that plagued its previous titles. There’s just something about this specific style of Pokémon that manages to perfectly capture a very special time in the series’ history. ![]() Aside from all of the great features it introduced, a ton of which would go on to become franchise staples, the sheer staying power of the visuals, the story, the music and the characters speak to this generation’s status as one of the most memorable ones to date. 18h 55m PlayedI’ll always have a special place in my heart for the third generation of Pokémon games for a number of different reasons.
